ABSTRACT

Intracranial hemangiopericytomas [HPCs] are rare central nervous system tumors arising from Zimmermann pericytes or mesenchymal cells. It is often difficult to distinguish these tumors from meningiomas based on clinical features and radiological findings. HPCs have been clinically detected in many of the intracranial compartments; here, we present a case with presumed meningioma that was adjacent to the right lateral ventricle and was confirmed by histopathology analysis. A 22-year-old man was referred to our hospital with a slowly expanding, painless mass adjacent to the right ventricle that he had first noticed by accident seven months before. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated the presence of homogeneously enhancing mass adjacent to the right lateral ventricle, which was suggestive of a meningioma. The tumor was definitively diagnosed as an intracranial HPC by pathological examination. It is imperative that the surgeon consider this rare diagnosis when evaluating patients with lesions regarded as extracerebral tumors.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the clinical significance of the serum angiopoietin-2(Ang-2) in the diagnosis, recurrence, invasion and metastasis of gastric cancer. Methods The serum Ang-2 and carcino-embryonic antigen (CEA) levels in 158 patients with gastric cancer (gastric cancer group) and 30 normal controls(control group) were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) technique respectively. The serum Ang-2 and CEA levels were also measured 2 weeks after operation in gastric cancer group and reexamined in the recurred gastric cancer patients in 2 years after operation (recurred and metastasis group). The correlation between the serum Ang-2 level and pathologic c haracterization of gastric cancer was evaluated. Results The serum Ang-2 and CEA levels in gastric cancer group [ (331.8 ±64.3),(42.6 ±37.3)μg/L] and recurred and metastasis group [(318.7 ±72.9),(40.5 ±36.7)μg/L] were significantly higher than those in control group [ (187.4 ± 32.7),(4.2 ± 3.1 )μ g/L] (P < 0.01 ),and the serum Ang-2 level 2 weeks after operation [ (211.6 ± 75.1 ) μ g/L ] was significantly decreased to the control group (P > 0.05 ),while the serum CEA level [ (33.4 ± 30.6) μ g/L ] was still significantly higher than the control group (P < 0.01 ).The sensitivity of the serum Ang-2 for diagnosis of gastric cancer was markedly higher than that of the serum CEA (P < 0.01 ).There was correlation between serum Ang-2 and degree of tumor differentiation,TNM pathological staging, lymphatic metastasis, invasion depth and tumor size (p <0.01 ),but there was no correlation between serum Ang-2 and tissue classification and location of gastric cancer (P> 0.05).Conclusion The serum Ang-2 level is suggested to be a valuable gastric cancer marker and conduce to the diagnosis of gastric cancer, the monitoring of recurrence after operation and evaluation of prognosis.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo study the distribution of human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) genotypes in Hubei province.

METHODSEpidemiological survey was carried out to HIV-1 carriers who were identified in Hubei province. HIV-1 env V3-V4, gag P17/24 and the first exon of tat region were amplified by nested-polymerase chain reaction(nPCR) .The sequences were determined, and phylogenetic analyses were then performed.

RESULTS4 HIV-1 strains or circulating recombinant forms (CRFs) were identified in Hubei province with subtype B' the predominant which covered 5 kinds of populations including former blood donors, blood receivers, spouses of the infected people, sex workers and their clients, homosexuals, mainly distributed in the areas with many former blood donors. CRF08-BC and CRF01-AE were found distributed in economically more developed cities or southern area of the province, and the major transmission routes was through sexual contact. Only 1 patient, an injecting drug user, was identified having subtype C.

CONCLUSIONSubtype B' was the main epidemic subtypes in Hubei province while CRF08-BC, CRF01-AE and subtype C were also circulating in the province, indicating the transmission of the disease might to become more complex.
